Laurie Nathan is an Advisor to ORG’s Sustainable Security Programme. He is the Director of the Centre for Mediation in Africa at the University of Pretoria and Visiting Professor at Cranfield University in the UK, where he teaches Managing Intelligence Reform. From 2005 to 2010 he was a visiting fellow at the Crisis States Research Centre at the London School of Economics. From 1992 to 2003 he was Executive Director of the Centre for Conflict Resolution at the University of Cape Town.
Among other appointments, he has served on the Carter Centre’s International Council for Conflict Resolution, the African Union’s mediation team for Darfur and the Ministerial Review Commission on Intelligence in South Africa. Drafter of the 1996 South African White Paper on Defence, he has also supported security and intelligence sector reform in Burundi, Ethiopia and South Sudan and has helped to develop the mediation capacities of African institutions including ECOWAS, IGAD and SADC.
