Baron Paul von Maltzahn

Paul von Maltzahn, born 1945 in Demmin, Pomerania, was raised in Holland. He has read Law and Arabic in Heidelberg, Munich and Hamburg. After having taken his Law Degree 1968 in Hamburg he studied Political Sciences at l’Institut d’Etudes Politiques (Sciences Po) in Paris.
In April 1970 he entered the Foreign Service of the Federal Republic of Germany. In his 40 years of service Paul von Maltzahn became a specialist in Middle Eastern affairs. Before becoming ambassador to Egypt in 200, he served in Beirut, Damascus, Algiers as well as in Paris and London.
As ambassador to Iran from 2003-2006, he was closely involved in the E3 and E3+3 negotiations before moving to Indonesia and Iraq.
Since September 2010 Paul von Maltzahn is Secretary-General of the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) in Berlin.
